Be Sickle Cell Smart Empowerment Day

by Sharon Gayle June 21, 2010

In support and appreciation for the work and research being done for those living with Sickle Cell Anemia and/or Thalassemia, I attended the:

Be Sickle Smart Empowerment Day
Saturday 19th June, 2010, New York, NY.
SCTPN - The Sickle Cell / Thalassemia Patients Network

This event was created to assist guests and attendees in connecting with the SCTPN community, dedicated to providing those living with Sickle Cell and/or Thalassemia, with motivation and encouragement.

The days events included:

  • Guest Speaker Dr. Ian Smith (VH1's Celebrity Fit Club)
  • A workshop to become educated on SCD and Iron Overload
  • Free Screenings to see if you were at risk for Iron Overload

Creative and Fun:

  • Guests were encouraged to bring poetry to share during an open-mic reading
  • A Children's art workshop (for kids 12 and under)
  • A SCD Wii challenge (for all ages)
  • All guests received a personally autographed SCD toolkit from Dr. Ian Smith, and
  • A scrumptious lunch was served during Dr. Ian Smiths talk.

The Be Sickle Smart Empowerment Day, did exactly what it set out to do; it encouraged, uplifted, and gave hope to those living with an often fatal disease. ~SG.
